James Monroe continued the so-called Virginia Dynasty by easily defeating his Federalist opponent, Rufus King of New York. As the last Federalist to seek the presidency, King was notable only for his outspoken opposition to slavery.By 1816, the Federalists were thoroughly discredited by their opposition to the War of 1812 and such ill-fated ventures as the Hartford Convention.
